Sumartin is picturesque town located in one of the coves from the islands southern side. Its ancient stone houses scattered through the green countryside like island in the sea of green. Present day Sumartin was founded as a heaven for people from the coast who fled before the Turks. Soon they turned Sumartin into an oasis of peace and prosperity.

The locals have through centuries been involved in fishing and agriculture so that the fruits o their labor still feature prominently in the local gastro offerings. Old Christian church of st. Nikola from the 9th century and Franciscan monastery are an important cultural symbol of this town.
